GETTING AROUND TOWN:

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Jess & Ron’s primary mode of transportation! The bus and subway system runs 24-hours and costs $2.75. MTA kiosks only take cash or credit and debit card. There are two choices of metrocards when purchasing.

Pay-Per Ride (Cash Value)

Fill up the card with any dollar amount ($5 to $80) and refill as needed!

Unlimited (Timed)

Can’t be used twice at the same subway station or bus for at least 18 minutes.

Jess & Ron Pro Tip:
A Pay-Per-Ride card can be swiped back-to-back at the same station. This means you can buy one and share it with family members or friends by swiping each other through the turnstile.

Unlimited (Timed) - 7 days for $33. Solid choice if you’re staying in NYC for at least a week and plan to use public transit a few times every day. It can’t be used at the same station for at least 18 minutes after it was swiped - meaning you can’t share this card with anyone else.

Jess & Ron Tip:
Download a pdf of the MTA Subway and Bus Maps to your phone to access the maps at any time.

TAXI

Cross streets are the easiest way to tell them your destination.
They all accept credit cards and cash.

Probably the safest option for car service since NYC has some of the strictest restrictions and background requirements for cab drivers in the country.

Jess & Ron’s Pro Tip:
Always ask for a receipt - it’s come in handy if we’ve forgotten something in the cab and need to track it down!

UBER, LYFT

Uber and Lyft are both good options for getting around the city if you don’t want to search for a cab. Great if you want to fit more than 4 people. Just be aware of any price surges that usually occur during rush hour times - the fares can be 2-4x more expensive.

GOOGLE MAPS

It gives accurate directions for on foot, public transportation, bike, car, and cab (including fare estimates).
It also shows you updated subway times!

Jess & Ron Pro Tip:
Add a 15-minute cushion to any commute. Train delays, traffic jams, and road closures can really ruin your life.
